HEALTH PLANS OFFER TECH SUPPORT
Some
plans are seeking to improve administrative efficiency and patient safety by
providing physicians access to innovative electronic tools.
Physician practices are understandably
reluctant to make major investments in information technology. Stagnant incomes
and rising expenses leave little room in a practice's budget for an outlay of
thousands of dollars, say, for an electronic medical record system. However,
stating the case for improved efficiencies and fewer medical errors, some
health plans are helping physicians to defray the costs of IT improvements.
In California, the Integrated Healthcare
Association, a healthcare policy group, has initiated a program that encourages
managed-care plans to reward providers based on a common set of quality
measures, including improvements in information technology. As of September,
four of the six plans participating in IHA's Pay for Performance program have
put in place bonuses or other financial incentives for those practices that
have adopted or made improvements to their IT systems.
Other health plans are taking a more proactive
approach to getting their providers to adopt information technology by actually
providing the hardware, software and paying for other associated costs, such as
licensing fees.

ELECTRONIC MEDICAL RECORDS
It is clear to all
physicians that EMR is a new emerging standard for medical records. EMR
improves the patient care by helping the physicians spend more time on the
patient care and less time on chart. EMR improves reimbursement. Managed care
and insurance companies, as well as Medicare and Medicaid demand detailed
documentation and often reduce payment if the chart is not well documented. Physicians
could spend as much as 1/3 to ˝ of their time on paperwork. For an average
office visit 15 minutes or 25 minutes, doctors may have to spend another 10 to
15 minutes for writing progress note and prescription.
An electronic medical record system can help
doctors raise revenues, improve patient care, enhance documentation, and gain
easier access to data. Plus it can reduce or eliminate dictation and the cost
of transcription.
THE COST OF AN EMR
Electronic records are making headway in
hospitals and large group practices, which usually have information technology
staffs and seven- or eight-figure IT budgets. But small groups and solo offices
are a tough environment: they have tiny budgets, no IT staff (the ones with a
knowledgeable office manager are lucky), and little spare time to get things
running without a major impact on revenue.
Many contend that small practices aren't
prepared, financially or organizationally, for an EMR.
What is the cost? There's a wide range of
estimates, depending on whom you ask. The initial cost of an EMR is cost at
somewhere between $15,000 and $30,000 per physician, and an extra 15 to 18
percent of the software cost for annual maintenance and updates. The total cost
is $1,500 to $2,000 per doctor per month on an ongoing basis.
One way being touted to reduce EMR costs is
to use an application service provider. www.ezmedicaloffice.com is an ASP. The
ASP model eliminates the need for a practice to buy pricey EMR software. It
also ends the hassles involved with purchasing and installing upgrades, and the
need for on-site information technology specialists. ASP systems are also
easier to learn. ASPs host EMR programs and clinical databases on a remote
server and serve them to doctors online. The monthly software-and-maintenance
fee will range from $150 to $800 per doctor.
At www.ezmedicaloffice.com,
the monthly
software-and-maintenance fee is absolutely unmatched, $39 per member with no
long-term contract. No setup fee. No annual update fee. No upgrade fee. No
license fee.
WHAT ARE THE FINANCIAL BENEFITS OF AN EMR?
If physicians dictate office notes, they
definitely save money on transcription, which can easily costs $1,000 a month
per physician.
There's general agreement that EMRs boost
coding levels and capture more charges than physicians usually write on their
encounter forms. Doctors have filed 18 percent more charges with their EMR.
CAN YOU AFFORD AN EMR AS A GIFT?
Yes and No! But definitely “yes” with www.ezmedicaloffice.com. The value
of your gift is not just $39 per month, but it will be
valued a lot more by your physicians.
